Brighten Your Morning in Japan with a Little Exercise

I live in rural Japan, but Japan’s a small country and I stand out, so I don’t get to go jogging regularly like I used to in the past. Stalkers are on the increase over here, so please be careful, ladies. Some of the bigger, nicer parks over here cost money to get in, so most of us are stuck settling for the smaller, less spacious places in the neighborhood. I grew up surrounded by nature, so I sometimes feel sad to see building after building.

For those of you out there thinking of good ways to get some exercise slipped into your day when you can’t manage to make it to the park, here are a few suggestions:

Play Some Music in the Morning and Dance

You slept in and now the kids are awake? The kids decided to wake up at 6:00 AM again? Why don’t you all exercise together! This has been our favorite lately. We’ve been listening to Elvis’ gospel songs and dancing around everywhere. Music is a really great way to get you feeling up even when your feeling down. If you live in a small space like we do, you can clear the floor, and then run around in circles.

Try Some Japanese Rajio Taiso!

There’s nothing like Japanese Radio Exercise on NHK to give you that extra boost to start the day. This year they are celebrating 60 years of broadcasting on TV and next year will be 90 years from the very first broadcast on the radio! Wow! Just 10 minutes of your time and you’ll get all the basic stretches you need for the day. I remember when I was in Kumamoto as an exchange student, kids in the community would gather together early in the morning in the summer to work out together. (And then go back to sleep, of course!) We don’t have a TV so I haven’t watched it in a while, but it looks like they are broadcasting it this year for people who are interested.

Find an Exercise Buddy

If you just can’t seem to hold yourself accountable to exercise regularly, it’s always nice to have someone help you out. Me and a friend a while back were exercising early in the morning using exercise videos on Youtube. As a side note, I would stay clear of the yoga videos, because of the demonic nature of yoga, (sorry yoga lovers) but back to my main point, there are lots of great videos out there if you and your friend can’t think of an exercise routine for yourselves.

Don’t Forget to Go Outside

As a final note, even if you can’t go out in the morning, don’t forget to get some sunlight to boost your vitamin D levels. Glass blocks almost all the vitamin D from the sun, so make sure you physically–without barriers–are getting the right amount of sun for your skin type. The Vitamin D Council has a great chart showing the different skin types of people and they thoroughly explain approximately how long you have to stay in the sun to keep your levels ideal.

Happy exercising! Stay safe! Stay healthy!

I saw that on your blog! I pray God gives you a speedy recovery! Exercising is so important, especially the stretching part of it.
